Forever marking a turning point in the Portuguese
energy industry, and with a global impact
Global warming must be halted as a matter of urgency to prevent melting and flooding, fires and storms, food shortages and poverty, the emergence of new diseases and the extinction of animal species. To do this, we must contain the temperature increase below 1.5°C.
From the highest international organisations and alliances such as the UN, to the individual initiatives of each country, many plans and measures have been adopted to achieve the goals that will allow us to preserve the environment and life as we know it on our planet. As the energy sector is one of the main contributors to the production of greenhouse gases, it is also one of the industries where these actions focus most, with the aim to promote the energy transition to more sustainable solutions, reducing or neutralising emissions of pollutant gases which result from the activity.
In this context, hydrogen has increasingly shown its potential as a green energy source and has strengthened its position as an alternative to fossil fuels. Learn how hydrogen fits into national and international energy transition policies. Saiba como o hidrogénio se enquadra nas políticas de transição energética nacionais e internacionais.
The Natural Energy of Hydrogen is an innovative and pioneering project that is introducing Green Hydrogen for the first time in Portugal into the gas distribution network. It is being developed in a closed network in the municipality of Seixal.

Green hydrogen will be injected into the natural gas network in Portugal. Seixal will house the first project in Portugal

WHAT IS IT?
Green Hydrogen is a clean, safe, renewable and carbon-free energy carrier (since it only emits water vapour) which can be distributed using the current gas network.
APPLICATIONS?
A renewable source of energy for heating our homes, cooking, mobility and industries whose demands cannot be met by electricity.
THE PROCESS?
Obtained from water by separating the hydrogen and oxygen atoms, using a process of electrolysis, with zero carbon emissions (since it only emits water vapour), green hydrogen finds the ideal conditions for production in Portugal.
